Government officials - members of political advocacy groups

RenoTaxRevolt (RTR) has testified, emailed and written various government officials concerning their membership in political advocacy organizations. For example “The Chamber” sounds benign like Save the Whales, but The Chamber is not a 501C-3 Charitable or Educational organization. It is a 501c-6 Trade/ Advocacy organization.

From their own website: “The Chamber proactively advocates for its members on issues affecting business in Northern Nevada. Advocacy is a key pillar of The Chamber of Commerce's mission.”

The Nevada Constitution: Article 8, Section 9 reads,

“The State shall not donate or loan money, or its credit, subscribe to or be, interested in the Stock of any company, association, or corporation, except corporations formed for educational or charitable purposes.”

We also found good case law from the Texas Supreme Court prohibiting such Chamber membership. We count over 200 government persons with govt titles or agencies that belong to The Chamber! How can persons or organizations such as the Nevada Secretary of State, Attorney General, Governor, District Court, Nevada Supreme Court, Reno City Attorney, Washoe District Attorney and others belong to a political advocacy group that they may have to regulate, issue opinions on, or be involved in litigation for or against?

It gets worse, per The Chamber's own website: “ The Chamber also offers an array of benefits and discounts ONLY available to our members. We have worked hard to negotiate these benefits to help you expand your business, reduce operating costs, and take advantage of the added value our members deserve.”

So if an official joins at taxpayer expense, he/ she may enrich themselves with “...benefits and discounts ONLY available to our members.”

Nuff said!
